Possibly my favourite designers, Heatherette always seems to have something new and interesting that, no matter what, causes a stir.

The intricate beading and bright red against the soft blue are what make this dress what it is. Its shape and the dangling beads at the bottom give it a 20s flapper feel, and as for the shoes: a must-have!

This dress is getting bad reviews although I love it. It could do without the red and white train although that doesn't take away from the main portion of the dress.

From their Spring 2008 collection, this dress is simply magnificent. The lace top adds sex appeal to what could've been a very child-like bottom.

I wish I could go to a Heatherette Christmas party. I'd like to point out one of the man's gold pants: could these be much more perfect?

Oscars

As we all know, last night was The Oscars. I watched the whole thing, forcing my eyes open the closer midnight crept upon me.

Here are some of the evening's winners:

Best picture: Slumdog Millionaire

Best Actress: Kate Winslet (The Reader)

Best Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz (Vicky Christina Barcelona)

Best Actor: Sean Penn (Milk)

Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)

Best Animated Feature: Wall-E

Best Make-up: Greg Cannom (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)

Best Costume Design: Michael O'Connor (The Duchess)

Best Original Screenplay: Dustin Lance Black (Milk)

In my opinion, the two best speeches of the evening were those of Dustin Black and Sean Penn, both for Milk. They spoke about their pride for the movie but also for the rights of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people all over the world. Mr. Black even had tears in his eyes during both speeches.

Now, on to one of the most talked about aspects of the Oscars: the oufits!

We'll start with the men:

Seth Rogen showed up wearing a very nice (very classy) tux. The twist, however, was that the jacket was made out of velvet.

Robert Downey Jr. looked as handsome as he always does. The only two things that I didn't care for was his tie -it was much too thick, it looked like it was trying to eat his lapel- and his hair.

Mickey Rourke, nominated for his part in The Wrestler, went down a different path. He wore a white suit with -if memory serves me correct- a black vest and no tie. He had multiple chains on his vest as well as his pants. His outfit, not the best but not the worst, but his hair looked as though he hadn't seen a shower in a few months and he wore sunglasses throughout the entire evening.

My favourite part of the evening was seeing all the beautiful gowns make their way down the red carpet. One major asset: sequins. Anne Hathaway, Marion Cottilard, Tina Fey, Kate Winslet and Jennifer Aniston were all sporting this theme. Shall we begin with the best?

Marissa Tomei looked absolutely stunning in her creamy-gray Versace gown. One shouldered, it had intricate folds everywhere:

Another woman sporting a gown of similar colour was Evan Rachel Wood. She wore a cream coloured gown and paired with her fair skin and lighter hair, it looked radiant. One concern though was that the chest did look a bit too large on her.

Another interesting gown was seen on Marion Cotillard. It was designed by John Galliano for Dior and it seemed that many women tried this look but only she got it. Although I think it could have done without the necklace, is the belt too much?
And there are always a few who don't quite get it:

Beyonce - although the neckline was excellent, the rest of the dress left me wanting more. It seemed as though someone had ironed on the golden intricacies and the whole dress reminds me of tapestry.

Other fashion misses included Miley Cyrus (wearing a Zohamarod multi-layered sequined piece), Meryl Streep (wearing an army-green floor-length t-shirt), Sophia Loren (wearing a too-tight, too vomit-yellow dress with floating sleeves) and Sarah Jessica Parker (wearing what appears to be a princess' prom dress).

Seeing as how it is only the day after the oscars, not too many pictures are out. I will get some as soon as possible to show you the pieces of art and the atrocities that made the 81st Academy Awards Ceremony.

Saturdays spent wisely

I didn't get out of bed until about noon so no jumpstart on homework but I did get a chance to go to Winterlude.

For those of you who don't know what that is, there are two parts: the first is here in my hometown and it's the ice sculpture portion and the other part is in Hull, I believe, and it's ice slides and the game/fun portion. I went to the ice sculptures with my mom today and, if you haven't gone, you should considering this is the last weekend it's open. I have no idea how people are capable of creating these masterpieces of out bricks of ice but bravo to them because they are truly beautiful. They had cellphones frozen in ice as an advertising scheme by Rogers, pigs skating, and my personal favourite: Cinderella's carriage.

Since we were a block away from The Rideau Centre, my mother and I decided to do a little shopping. We stopped by Jacobs, where I purchased two black skirts and a tie, and Aritzia where I got a blue deep-v t-shirt, army green knitted tank-dress, blue tna sweater, and a gray fall coat. The only "problem" (well, this is the real reason I bought it) is that the dress arm holes come past the ribcage, so I'll either have to wear a bandeau or another shirt.

I don't think my ex-military principal would appreciate the bandeau.

As soon as I purchase a memory card for my father's camera, I can show you what I mean.

I've also been thinking about what clothing I'll bring with me to Paris. You see, my school is going on an 8-day trip throughout Paris and my best friend Blair and I are going. Lots of fun to be had! He said the weather should be superb although isn't it cold there, too? I'm thinking I'll bring my shiny leggings from American Apparel and definitely my new coat!

I'm working tomorrow 9:30am to 5:30pm so I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! And for those of you who don't know what to do - why not build an ice sculpture?

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Tonight, I saw the movie "Confessions of a Shopaholic." The movie itself was the generic romantic-comedy (girl meets boy, girl falls in love..) and could get tiredsome the more times you see it. However, what was worth seeing was the amount of necklaces the main character, Rebecca Bloomwood, wore. These weren't just regular necklaces - they were pieces of art. Each looked like they weighed ten pounds but I would risk neck problems to wear them. My personal favourite was the anchor necklace; it was chest-length, blue and white, and if I recall, it may have had a few small rhinestones. Although some of her outfits left me wanting more her necklaces fulfilled my deepest desires.

Possibly my favourite shoe designer, Christian Louboutin never seems to make an ugly shoe. His signature red bottom and stiletto heel is enough to make even the penny-pinchers buy a few pairs. These are just a few of his impressive collection:

These remind me of a sophisticated business woman gone bad. Truly astounding.

These are Christian Louboutin Swarovski Chrystal and Detail Pump. Pair these with coloured tights and a little black dress, anyone?

Christian Louboutin Very Noeud Slingbacks. Although they are probably one of his "plainer" shoes, these are by far my favourite. The slight platform, the peep toe, and of course the one-sided large bow leave nothing more needing to be added. One of my goals for when I grow up is to own this shoe.

The Others

People say they don't care what others think of them.
I say hooey!
Everyone, in some way or another, care what friends and strangers alike think about them, whether for their style, intelligence, social life, etc.
I wonder, though - is it possible to live without caring of the opinion of others? To leave your home in fuzzy pink slippers and haircurlers and not want to run back to the safety of your bed? To dance when everyone is watching but not to make them laugh? We put clothing on to diversify ourselves among the groups of today in hopes that we'll stand out. You have your Abercrombie & Fitch Barbies and Kens, your Thrift Store Cools and your T-shirts With Jeans Nextdoor Neighbour Nellies, just to name a few. I, for one, do not even know what sort of category I'd fall under but am sure that there's one out there for me.
Oh, how horrible is that? I'm labelling the whole world in one swift sentence.

Personally, I believe that most people do care what others think of them, whether they're willing to admit it or not. And if you are one of the very few who does not, well then sir or madam, I applaud you.
